Strikes became hot news in the last months of 2008, but they only seem to be big news when they are either looming or beginning. To our surprise, Canada Post settled with PSAC members almost two weeks ago, and after a web search for news pertaining to this event, we could only find a press release from UNI. The PSAC website had zero information about a settlement, nor did any of the news websites that originally gave the story their attention.
This made us think of two other strikes on-going: Ottawa Transit workers and those at York University. The York strike only affects a small number of people (students, staff, and University stakeholders), while the Ottawa Transit strike affects nearly everyone in a city of 1 million. Yet the York strike is getting more media attention than Obama’s inauguration.
I think it’s time our communications department gaveĀ CUPE 3093’s office a call to find out what their secret is.
